THE RUNAWAY MADONNA IN SULMONA

Madonna che scappa in piazza a Sulmona

The rite of the “Madonna che Scappa in Piazza”, “the Runaway Madonna in the Square”, in Sulmona (Abruzzo) is organised by the confraternity of St. Mary of Loreto (the Lauretans). Every year, on Easter Sunday, the statue of the Madonna dressed in a black cloak arrives in the square and, here, sees her resurrected son Jesus: at this moment, the black cloak falls off and gives way to a bright green dress. The statue of the Madonna then starts to “run” towards the statue of Jesus: it is an unmissable moment, full of passion and emotion!
